Amina queen of Zazzau

celebrated for her military prowess and visionary leadership. As the first woman to become the Sarauniya (queen) in the male-dominated Hausa society, Amina led vast armies, expanded the borders of Zazzau (now Zaria in northern Nigeria).

Beyond her reputation as a fearless warrior, Queen Amina was also renowned for her striking beauty. Contemporary and later accounts describe her as a paragon, with “hair like a lion’s mane and skin, dark and sooty”.
