Color field Painting
It is closely related to abstract expressionism but distinct from action painting due to its emphasis on large fields of flat, solid color rather than gestural brushstrokes.
This movement was pioneered by artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still, who sought to create a modern, mythic art form that evoked emotions through the power of color.
Color field painting influenced later art movements such as Post-Painterly Abstraction and Minimalism, emphasizing form and color over gesture and action.
